Judith (Judy) Alvarez is an exceptionally credentialed leader in the golf industry and a Member of the PGA of America. Demonstrating a commitment to the highest levels of instruction, she achieved the advanced status of "Certified PGA Professional" in Player Development. Alvarez operates the Judy Alvarez Golf Academy and has spent more than thirty-two years as a proud PGA member. Her foundational expertise in adaptive sports education is anchored in her role as one of the principal developers of the PGA HOPE (Help Our Patriots Everywhere) Certification Training Curriculum, as well as serving as the program's inaugural Lead National Trainer and Lead Instructor.
Service and Leadership to the Game
For six decades, Judy Alvarez has contributed to the sport as a competitive trailblazer, master instructor, author, and tireless advocate for inclusive athletics. She first broke barriers in the sport as a competitor, earning distinction as the first woman to play on the all-male varsity golf team at Hofstra University before competing professionally in ladies' mini-tour events. In the 1980s and 1990s, her passion pivoted toward coaching. For more than two decades, she has been an integral pillar of the PGA of America’s Education and Professional Development programs, serving as a PGA Subject Matter Expert (SME) and an adjunct faculty member. Traveling to PGA Professional Golf Management (PGM) Universities nationwide, she has conducted seminars for thousands of PGA Associates to help them form their own teaching methodologies. Her leadership is defined by a charismatic, empathetic presence that fosters a culture of respect and empowerment. Alvarez has championed the concept of golf as a therapeutic tool, a philosophy she articulated in her book, "Broken Tees and Mended Hearts: A Life's Journey Serving Wounded Warriors and Injured Spirits". The book outlines how the sport functions as a remarkable healing medium to improve the quality of life for disabled athletes and individuals recovering from trauma. For many years, she has aligned her adaptive instruction with the National Alliance for Accessible Golf to break down systemic barriers and ensure the game is welcoming to individuals with any form of disability.
Growth of Game Impact
Alvarez's impact on the growth of the game is characterized by an exponential "train-the-trainer" model, which ensures that golf facilities nationwide are structurally equipped to meet the accessibility needs of all players. It is estimated that she has directly instructed more than 2,000 PGM University students and PGA Associates during her tenure as a Subject Matter Expert. Beyond the university setting, she has taught over 60 specialized training sessions for more than 2,000 PGA and LPGA Member Professionals. Cumulatively, across her curriculum development, leadership of the HOPE Certification seminars, and general accessibility initiatives, Alvarez has educated over 10,000 golf professionals on the best practices of adaptive instruction. On a regional level, she established six PGA HOPE chapters within the South Florida PGA Section, directly and positively changing the lives of more than 500 military veterans. Her willingness to share her wisdom has created life-changing, and in some instances life-saving, opportunities for thousands of participants.
Initiatives
Alvarez was instrumental in creating the structural foundation of the PGA HOPE certification training curriculum and acted as its first lead national instructor. Her direct formatting of this program since its inception in 2015 has allowed the initiative to scale massively. Nationwide, PGA HOPE programs have successfully taught over 65,000 veterans. In 2025 alone, certified instructors organized and executed more than 1,200 multi-week sessions at over 600 locations across the country, averaging 20 veteran participants per session. Over the past three years, Alvarez has maintained an active pace by delivering 28 formal PGA HOPE Certification training programs. To further lower barriers to entry, she aggressively utilizes her digital platforms to promote free adaptive golf program resources, diagnostic coaching tips, and specialized equipment tools designed to make the game universally playable.
Previous Awards and Honors
The industry-wide prestige of Judy Alvarez is reflected in numerous local, regional, and national accolades. In 2019, she was selected from among 41 Section candidates to receive the PGA of America National Patriot Award, which honors a PGA Member who personifies patriotism and demonstrates an unwavering commitment to those who have served the United States. Regionally, she was honored twice by her peers as the South Florida PGA Section Player Development Award winner in 2011 and 2016. Her literary contributions were recognized when her book was nominated for the USGA Herbert Warren Wind Award, the premier literary prize presented by the USGA Golf Museum. She has also been named the LPGA Southeast Section Teacher of the Year, and is regularly ranked among Golf Digest’s 50 Best Women Teachers in America and the Golf Range Association of America Top 50 Teachers. Athletically and instructionally, she served as the PGA Professional for Team Metropolitan at the 2019 PGA HOPE Secretary's Cup at Bethpage Black and served as a lead instructor at the PGA HOPE National Golf and Wellness Week at Congressional Country Club through 2023.
